About The Style Sheet

The Style Sheet is an independent copy desk that writes down the editing rules most often relearned the hard way. It exists because consistency is the quiet part of credibility: readers notice when a publication cannot decide how to spell a number or punctuate a headline.

Every rule is filed the same six ways: the rule itself, the correct usage, the common error, an example, any legitimate exception, and why the rule matters. That shared card lets you compare a punctuation question and a headline question on the same terms instead of trading opinions.

Our editors treat AP style as the default house standard and explain the reasoning behind each entry, so the guidance can be applied with judgment. This is general education for editors, reporters, students, and anyone who proofreads their own writing. We do not cover current events, and we make no claim that any single stylebook is the only correct one.
